Water World

The District's Water Department is responsible for water treatment and water quality, water resources, water conservation and backflow prevention. Our goal is to provide our customers and visitors with a safe and dependable supply of drinking water. In doing so, the District complies with a number of regulatory agencies for water quality, administrative and governmental issues.

The East River Water Treatment Plant is located north of the ski area, taking advantage of two gravity flow sources. The main source is surface water pumped up from the East River. Once pumped to storage, the treated water is distributed to our many residential and commercial customers throughout Mt. Crested Butte. Pump Stations supply needed pressure to two of the upper subdivisions.

Despite being built in 1985, the Treatment plant continues to produce excellent water due to a continuing program of upgrading equipment, testing procedures, software and staff skills.

Meridian Lake Park

In 1995 it was recommended by State officials that the Meridian Lake reservoir and water distribution to the residents of the subdivision be managed by the Mt Crested Butte Water & Sanitation District. Meridian Lake Park then became included as part of the District. A filtration treatment plant and water storage tank, both a first for the Subdivision, were constructed in 1996. Treatment plant capacity was doubled in 2007; methodology was vastly improved, thus covering future growth and variable raw water quality in one project. There are two water sources for the Meridian Lake area; gravity flow and the reservoir.
